Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert the price of sawn timber from m3 to price per piece?

To work out the price of each piece of sawn timber when you have the price per cubic metre (m³), first, you’ll need to know the volume of one piece. If you know the dimensions of the timber (length, width, and height), you can calculate its volume in cubic metres. Once you have that, divide the price per m³ by the volume of one piece. This will give you the cost of each individual piece of timber.

Example: If the price of sawn timber is £500 per m³ and one piece has a volume of 0.05 m³, then the price per piece is £500 ÷ 0.05 = £25 per piece.

How do I convert the price of sawn timber from m³ to price per linear metre?

To convert the price of sawn timber from cubic metres to linear metres (a length of timber), you’ll need to know the cross-sectional area (e.g., width × thickness) of the timber. This is the size of the face when you look at the end of the piece.

Once you know the cross-sectional area in square metres (m²), you can multiply it by 1 metre to get the volume per linear metre. Then, divide the price per m³ by the volume per linear metre to find the cost for 1 metre of timber.

Example: If the price of sawn timber is £200 per m³ and the cross-sectional area is 0.05 m², the price per metre would be £200 ÷ 0.05 = £4000 per metre.

How do I convert the price of sawn timber from m³ to price per square metre?

If you want to work out the price of sawn timber per square metre (m²) instead of cubic metres, you’ll need to know the thickness of the timber in metres.

To do the conversion, multiply the thickness by 1 m² to find the volume of one square metre of timber. Then, divide the price per m³ by the volume of one square metre.

Example: If the price of timber is £500 per m³ and the timber is 0.1 metres thick, the price per square metre is £500 ÷ 0.1 = £5000 per m².

How do I convert the price of sawn timber from m³ to price per 100 linear metres?

To find the price of 100 linear metres of timber when the price is given per cubic metre, you’ll first need to know the cross-sectional area (width × thickness) of the timber. This tells you how much volume there is in 1 metre of timber.

Once you know the cross-sectional area, multiply it by 100 metres to get the total volume for 100 linear metres of timber. Then, divide the price per m³ by the total volume to find the price for 100 linear metres.

Example: If the price of sawn timber is £600 per m³ and the cross-sectional area is 0.02 m², the price for 100 linear metres would be £600 ÷ 2 = £300 for 100 metres.
