BSW Timber has donated 25 sawn sleepers to veteran’s charity Veterans Growth.

The sleepers will be used by the charity in order to help provide its unique horticulture therapy sessions to struggling ex-service members at its communal garden in Catsfield, East Sussex.

Veterans Growth is a unique charity that helps veterans overcome their mental health battles through taking part in community gardening projects and horticulture therapy.

The donation was kindly aided by BSW customer Littlewood Fencing of Battle who helped deliver the sleepers to the charity.

James Brennan, Marketing Manager at BSW Timber, said: “It’s great to be able to support Veterans Growth, we love all that the charity does to help veterans and the fact that they utilise horticulture therapy lines really well with BSW’s principles.”

Jason Stevens, founder of Veterans Growth, said: “Veterans’ Growth would like to thank BSW Timber for the generous donation of 25 sleepers. These will be used to make accessible beds that can be used by our disabled veterans to grow edible vegetables and perennial flowers. This will be part of a structured therapy plan, which is individual to each veteran, with a view to improving mental and physical health.”

Founder Jason Stevens is a veteran of 16 years in the Army. He undertook tours in Northern Ireland, Afghanistan, Iraq, Sierra Leone and spent time in Germany.
He was medically discharged from the MOD in 2016, after he suffered a bilateral stroke caused by a hole in his heart. The stroke has left Jason with disabilities, both physical and cognitive.

Jason was also diagnosed with PTSD and has been undergoing treatment.

Jason spent some time at Headley Court undergoing rehabilitation following his stroke. He found the only thing that seemed to have any impact on his mental wellness was gardening which is where he got the inspiration to set up Veterans Growth.

BSW Timber’s range of landscaping sleepers is incredibly versatile, giving customers the opportunity to get creative. BSW supply railway sleepers that have been treated with high pressure preservative to ensure longevity and its range is available in an array of finishes.

Its sawn sleepers have endless garden or leisure applications. They can be used as boundaries, edgings and planters as well as distinctive raised beds and borders, decks, terraces and walkways.

Veterans’ Growth works with veterans from the army, navy and RAF who suffer with mental health issues. The charity aims to provide treatment and support to veterans who are unable to access help and support from the NHS or other charitable organisations, or those for whom existing treatments have been unsuccessful.

The aim of the charity is to provide support and a place on the programme to every veteran in the UK who wants to attend and/or was unable to access help through other channels.
