BSW Timber’s mill in Dalbeattie has donated timber boards and offcuts to the People’s Project in Dumfries to facilitate a great community-based project.
In collaboration with HMP Dumfries, inmates have used the timber to take part in a local community project to create bird boxes, bat boxes, hedgehog houses, bug hotels and planters for throughout Castledykes Park, Dumfries.
With an ambitious environmental and sustainability agenda, the team at BSW understand the importance of protecting and preserving natural habitats and spaces for public enjoyment in the great outdoors.
Community donations is one of a number of ways in which BSW’s portfolio of businesses is supporting people and places across the UK. The leading sawmiller heavily engaged with numerous community projects and highly values the opportunity to make a difference in areas local to its business locations across the UK.
The People’s Project is a local group reimagining the meaning of community, instrumental in many success stories across Dumfries and Galloway, including being past winners of the Best Large Town category in the Keep Scotland Beautiful competition among others.
The People’s Project mobilises community groups with the aims of helping to transform these towns for local people to be proud of via innovative initiatives, including tree planting schemes, and the creation of timber products as planters, bird boxes and much more.
Anne Simpson, secretary of the People’s Project Dumfries, said: “We’re very grateful for the timber support offered by BSW Timber. We are upgrading the whole of the park with careful consideration of its historic and wildlife interest, to which the natural timber will lend itself perfectly.
“The new bird and bat boxes will be crucial as we try to tempt wildlife back into the area with some specially crafted habitats.”
Scott Murray, internal sales manager at Dalbeattie, said: “Giving something back to the local community is important to us as a business and is well-received by our employees, many of whom live nearby.
“The work carried out by the People’s Project is making a real visible difference across the town, as well as engaging the minds, skills and lives of the individuals involved in rolling out its many initiatives. We are proud to be making this donation and we thank the staff and volunteers involved for their continuous efforts.”
