Apprentices from BSW Timber’s Fort William sawmill have been involved in the construction of a pergola project. The ten apprentices helped to construct a decorative pergola for Banavie Primary School.

The project was undertaken as part of Scottish Apprenticeship Week, which runs from the 4th to the 8th of March.

Ewen Smith, Engineering Manager at Fort William Sawmill, said: “It was a great couple of days, which allowed the apprentices to showcase the skills they have been developing whilst within the BSW apprenticeship programme and it was also nice to be able to give something back to the local community.”

Banavie Primary School had recently purchased a large tepee structure and were looking to have some way of erecting it on a level and dry floor.  BSW apprentices came to their aid, constructing a 7-metre square decking area using BSW Timber.

A decorative pergola was also constructed to provide a centre piece in the garden area of the school.

From 4-8th March BSW Timber celebrates the achievements of individual apprentices within the company and all those who contribute to their success.

Apprenticeships and work-based learning are providing the skills needed for BSW to continue as a successful business. This year’s Apprenticeship Week theme was ‘Skills for the Future’, recognising the importance of BSW investing in its workforce.

Tony Lockey, Group Learning and Development Manager at BSW Timber, said: “Our apprentices this apprentice week have been doing social and community events to benefit local communities. We have been promoting BSW at several career events inspiring young people and engaging with colleges and schools.

“Fort William’s Mill is a leading ambassador in the promotion of the local community. Ewen Smith the engineering manager in Fort William has led by example in promoting our apprentices and mentoring our young talent.”

Apprenticeship opportunities within the BSW Timber Group are growing and the group provides apprenticeship opportunities which promote dedication, energy and ideas and which benefit: young people, the local communities and the BSW business.
