Michael McGuire, an operator at BSW Fort William, has been honored with a prestigious BBC Scotland’s People Award for his outstanding charity work in the region. His efforts primarily revolve around Anam Cara Fasgadh, a charity he co-founded. The charity’s aim is to provide respite accommodation, recreational activities, and support to families who have lost a baby, child, or young person.
McGuire received the award at the BBC Scotland’s People Awards in December. The event, hosted by Jackie Bird, traversed Scotland to spotlight unsung heroes and community champions—individuals who have significantly contributed to making the country a better place to live. The show highlighted various notable figures, including wildlife enthusiasts, disability champions, sports personalities like Gregor Townsend, and artists such as KT Tunstall and Dermot Kennedy, along with a special appearance by the cast of Dirty Dancing.
As a father of two and a former RAF serviceman, McGuire’s commitment to supporting families in his hometown of Fort William is deeply personal. Anam Cara Fasgadh was born from the shared desire of McGuire and three friends to do more after the Scottish Parliament abolished Child Funeral Fees in 2018.
The charity has gathered notable patrons, including Carolyn Harris, Deputy Leader for Welsh Labour and MP for Swansea East; journalist and author Bella Mackie; actor Gavin Wright; BBC broadcaster Mairi Rodgers, and Will Quince, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Welfare Delivery.
