BSW Group’s marketing manager James Brennan was seeing stars this summer after a meeting with BBC DIY stalwart and household name Nick Knowles.
James met Nick after BSW donated a significant amount of its IRO Timber product range to Surfability in Swansea for the hit BBC show ‘DIY SOS: The Big Build’ for Children in Need.
BSW supplied 500 lengths of its unique charred IRO Timber external cladding in driftwood, which was used to help transform the surf center in Caswell Bay, South Wales.
The stunning yakisugi-inspired timber was utilised by Nick, the DIY SOS team and countless volunteers to clad the exterior of the surf centre. The facility is home to Surfability, an amazing charity which offers inclusive and adapted surfing experiences to people with additional needs.
James Brennan, marketing manager at BSW Timber, said: “We were absolutely thrilled to be able to help out with this project for the Children in Need episode of DIY SOS, which we felt was especially important in what’s been such a difficult year for a lot of people.
“Surfability is a fantastic charity which does some exceptional work in Wales, and we’re all massively proud to have been able to help bring this project to life for such a great cause.”
On meeting presenter Nick Knowles, James added: “He was a really nice bloke who had time for everyone. Along with the rest of the DIY SOS team he was very passionate about the project and the positive impact it’ll have on the community. It was great to hear how much they care about the great work they do.
“Being part of the reveal day really put it all into perspective. It was a humbling experience to have been there alongside suppliers, contractors, volunteers, landscapers, joiners and everyone else that worked so hard to make it happen, and to see how happy Surfability were with their new facility topped it all off. The day just encapsulated what good you can do when you come together.”
Nick has been the presenter of DIY SOS for over 20 years and the show has broadcast almost 250 episodes, helping to transform the lives of many people across the country.
After starting in 1980 Children in Need is now in its 40th year and has raised almost £50M for children’s charities, both in the UK and abroad last year.
Following this year’s coronavirus pandemic the show has taken on special significance and is set to be hosted by Alex Scott MBE, comedian Chris Ramsay, and actor Stephen Mangan.
Surfability are based in Caswell Bay and have been offering world-leading adaptive surf experiences since 2013.
The show will be aired in the UK on BBC1 on Thursday the 12th November at 8pm.
